Missoula Community Food Coop

About Missoula Community Market:
The Missoula Community Food Co-op is a member-owned and operated grocery, whose mission it is to provide affordable access to local, whole and high quality foods through the participation and labor contributions of its members. Each member owns common stock, contributes three hours a month, and has a vote in the decisions of the co-op.

The co-op exists in order to make good food more affordable, to serve the needs of its members, and to promote the principles of democracy and cooperation.

The Missoula Food Co-op's vision is a thriving cooperative market and neighborhood hub that links local producers with consumers to build community and strengthen the regional economy.

As we transition from a food buying club to a storefront, the co-op needs the support of members to get off the ground and get further funding.

Membership involves a one-time fee (over time, if needed) of $125 per individual($100 if you pay before our doors open) or $15 if on government assistance plus a work requirement of several hours a month.  Volunteer jobs include sorting groceries, outreach/media, childcare, product research, farmwork, office work, etc.

In 2001, a food buying club was established by a group of Northside residents with the intention of gaining better access to bulk, natural and affordable food.  The North Missoula Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit driven by northside neighborhood needs, now coordinates the buying club and is working with city residents and regional farmers to help establish a community a food co-op and small-scale shared use kitchen.  The shared-use kitchen will provide space for Missoula entrepreneurs to produce value-added products to sell.  The Missoula Food Co-op's mission is to link low-income residents with local and regional farmers in a system that encourages sustainability and economic justice for producers and consumers.

Sustainable Practices, Products, & Services: The Missoula Food Co-op will be a member-run cooperative grocery committed to nutrition, local food, and sustainable practices.  Cooperatives offer members more power over their food choices and help to create stable, healthy communities.
