About Missoula Housing Authority: The Missoula Housing Authority is a public non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe, decent and affordable housing to individuals and families to Missoula. Missoula voters created the housing authority in 1978. Currently, Montana state law says public housing authorities shall address the problems of poor building conditions, improper planning and excesssive land coverage and unsafe conditions caused by overcrowding.

 

Sustainable Practices, Products, & Services: Starting in the administrative office, Missoula Housing Authority recycles all paper products, aluminum, tin, plastic, and cardboard. MHA pays living wages to its employees and provides a strong benefit package and including an Employee Assistance Program and a Flex Plan. MHA supports working class families, disabled and senior households with housing in the form of rental assistance or properties MHA owns and manages. MHA builds all new developments with energy efficient practices, green building techniques, neighborhood input, and holistic design standards. MHA purchases locally on a daily basis and employs local contractors and consultants almost exclusively. The Missoula Housing Authority is the largest provider of affordable housing in the City of Missoula. The Housing Authority owns and manages 333 units and administers rental subsidies for 855 units. The Housing Authority has been in existence since 1978.

Awards & Achievements: Missoula Housing Authority produces Annual and Five-year Agency plans to provide guidance for the agency that are open for public comment.  These plans are coordinated with other local planning efforts, such as the City’s Consolidated Plan.  MHA last conducted a physical needs assessment in 2003 to assess capital improvements to its public housing stock in 5, 10, and 20 year increments. MHA is currently conducting an energy audit of its public housing stock.  In 2008 MHA was awarded by The Mountain Plains National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Organization (NAHRO) special recognition for being a high performing agency, an award for the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program’s Meritorious Achievement by an FSS participant, and outstanding annual plan report.  Recently MHA was awarded by the HUD Continuum of Care five new Shelter Plus Care vouchers that target chronically homeless and disabled individuals, increasing the program total to 101.    MHA was awarded through the Capital Grant from the Veterans Administration, a van for the veterans at Valor House.  In addition, MHA manages a highly successful Section 8, and Public Housing programs.
