Shelter Designs Yurts Troy Montana

About Shelter Designs Yurts:
Shelter Designs build high quality, custom fabric yurts that can withstand the demanding environment of the Northern Rockies. With nearly 10 years of yurt building experience, we know how to make an affordable, sustainable yurt that performs year round under all conditions.

Sustainable Practices, Products, & Services:
Sustainability is one of the driving visions behind Shelter Designs.

After building conventional homes for many years, we decided to focus on a more environmentally conscious line of building. We had built a few yurts for fun, and moved to making it our passion and livelihood. We offer one yurt model, the Eco-Yurt, which uses all local, sustainably harvested lumber in the frame. This includes hand peeled round lodgepole roof rafters. We also use a no VOC organic tung oil as a finish on all of our woodwork.

One of the greatest challenges in fabric structures is finding an outer fabric covering that does not contain the chemical cocktail found in vinyl products that are typically used on yurts, but is still durable and waterproof. After much research, we found a product called Polyolefin. This durable fabric can be recycled up to 7 times, and is much healthier to produce than a vinyl coated fabric. We are proud to be one of the first yurt manufacturers to offer more environmentally sensitive fabric options to our clients.
