Thursday, May 8 – Real Meals for Women, 5-9 pm, Orchard Gardens Community Barn (210 N. Grove Street). “Real meals”, a project of the NMCDC and the Missoula Community Co-op, is a meal prepared and shared by women in collaboration to create community and opportunity. Join Turtle Biologist Kathy Griffin for a terrific day spent exploring the life of a painted turtle in the Mission Valley. June 1-6 – Citizens Direct Action Training Camp, in Montana (site to be announced). GlobalWarmingSolution.org and ClimateGroundZero.org are co-sponsoring a Citizens' Direct Action Training Camp. The camp will be led by some of the leading trainers in non-violent direct action in the country. July 20th-25th - The 22nd Annual Montana Natural Resources Youth Camp for students ages 14-18. Campers spend one week (July 20-25, 2008) in the rustic setting of the Lubrecht Experimental Forest east of Missoula and learn about Montana's natural resources. Enrollment is open now and campers are accepted on a first-come basis. The full cost of the camp is $175.00 which includes meals, supplies, and lodging. Campers are encouraged to contact their local Conservation District for sponsorship, which will cover much of the camp cost. Montana Natural History Center Saturday Kids Activities, Saturdays at 2. Admission is 50 cents for kids, $1 for adults and MNHC members are free. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to go outside. Programs run about an hour to an hour and a half. Great for kids ages 5 and older.

City Council Seeks Greenhouse Gas and Energy Conservation Team Applicants. If you’ve been looking for a way to be more involved in decisions affecting Missoula, the City Council has a volunteer (non-paying) position available on the Missoula Greenhouse Gas and Energy Conservation Team that may interest you. The applicant must represent the Nonprofit Conservation sector. The term for this interim position begins immediately and ends on July 31, 2010. The Greenhouse Gas/Energy Conservation Plan provides for the creation of the Greenhouse Gas/Energy Conservation Team to aid in the community-wide education and communication of energy efficiency opportunities that minimize greenhouse gas generation and to monitor and lead energy efficiency initiatives throughout the area. The team meets monthly and works with the Missoula Area Chamber of Commerce and the Missoula Area Sustainable Business Council.

Grow Montana is now accepting applications for FoodCorps, a team of five full-time AmeriCorps VISTA's helping schools and colleges across Montana to buy more locally-grown foods. Now in the third year of this nationally-innovative program, FoodCorps works with Montana farmers, ranchers, students, parents, teachers, and activists to create long-term change. Last year's team returned over $1 million to Montana's food and agricultural economy. At the same time, they protected the planet by reducing the amount of fossil fuel used and cutting air pollution. FoodCorps members hone organizing skills through interactive trainings ranging from the ins and outs of local food systems to the fundamental principles of community organizing. Five positions are available in Missoula, Bozeman, and Pablo. The next FoodCorps team will begin work in mid-July, so

The Montana Food Bank Network is looking for volunteer garden workshop instructors. Share your gardening knowledge and skills with limited income Missoulians at Start to Finish: low cost, low impact gardening for the urban environment. This is a free garden workshop series that started in March with garden planning and is finishing in October with a canning/food preservation event. Volunteer instructors will help develop a creative, hands-on curriculum and teach a variety of topics at our demonstration garden plot at Orchard Garden Community Garden. Instructors can be continuing or one time and will need to be available one or two Saturdays per month from now to October. A stipend of fresh, organic produce from the garden is avaliable in return for volunteering. This is a great way to help in creating a more sustainable and self-sufficient community! Missoula County urgently needs election judges to staff polling stations during the upcoming elections on May 6, June 3 and November 4 this year. The need for this year's primary on June 4 is especially acute. If you are 18 and a registered voter, you are eligible. The positions pay (minimum wage) but more importantly they make democracy workable. Please call County Elections at 258-4751 today to sign up. Three hours of training will be needed.

Missoula Community Co-op has opened its doors as a retail business. They are open Tues.-Fri. 12-7pm and Saturday from 10am-3pm and are located at 1500 Burns on the Westside (7 blocks north of Broadway and 2 blocks east of Russell). The co-op is member owned and run, a source for affordable access to local and healthful foods, aspiring to become a community hub, a democratic business, and operated for the benefit of its members, the community and the earth.

Free Cycles Missoula, a program of the nonprofit organization MIST, has the mission of turning unused bicycles into reliable transportation for the community. Repowering Montana: A Blueprint for Homegrown Energy Self-Reliance , a106-page report just released by AERO -- Montana's Alternative EnergyResources Organization is available to read at www.aero.org. Montana will prosper by meeting all of its in-state energy needs with cost-effective energy conservation and by harnessing our state's abundant, clean, renewable energy sources such as wind, sun, biofuels and hydropower. At the same time we can save money, create jobs and revitalize our rural and urban communities. This "practical vision" is detailed in Repowering Montana: A Blueprint for Homegrown Energy Self-Reliance.

NorthWestern Energy is offering its Montana customers rebates for the purchase of motors that meet the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) premium efficiency motor performance requirements. The E+ Motor Rebate program began in 2006. NorthWestern’s program offers rebates ranging from $5 to $230, depending on the size of the new motor. It will negotiate rebates for motors larger than 200 horsepower.
