Please donate to a benefit for Zane Goicovich, a four-year-old boy with a heavy load. Zane has epilepsy, sensory processing disorder, autism and brain damage. Because Zane is resistant to epilepsy drugs, we are trying to raise money for Zane and his parents to travel to The Denver Children's Hospital and get brain surgery. He is a good candidate, and if the surgery is successful, it would CURE his epilepsy!

SBC Members & Friends....

As a new decade breaks, we leave behind an era of great change. There was huge upheaval in the climate, in politics and perhaps most notably, the economic crisis of last year left broken communities in its wake.  As grim as global news may seem, there is also great hope. We have the knowledge, tools and resources to begin to rebuild our communities with the model of local, living economies of scale.

Our members are more than employers and profit-makers; they are neighbors, community builders and the starting point for social innovation, aligning commerce with the common good and bringing transparency, accountability, and a caring human face to the marketplace.

Here at SBC, we provide the tools and resources needed to educate our members on the most up-to-date green business practices and teach them what makes a sustainable business. We educate the general public through our lecture series, workshops and events and show how being an empowered consumer positively effects us all and why keeping our dollars in our community can prevent us from feeling the pinch recession.

Keep your eyes peeled for our Fall/Winter 2009 Journal.  Look for them in member locations around town.  If you would like to get your hands on a copy and can't seem to find one, please email me and I'll make sure to get one to you!

Yours in Sustainability,

CALLING ALL LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESSES:

Please Participate in the 2010 Independent Retailer Study

Study Will Highlight Impacts of 'Local First'
and 'Buy Local' Campaigns

This is a special request to participate in the 2010 Independent Business Survey conducted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance! You can access the survey online by clicking here. Further details about the survey are below.

The survey closes today, Tuesday, January 12 at midnight Pacific time. Thus far, the survey has 300 fewer business respondents than in 2009.

Background on the survey:
Last year, many BALLE networks partnered with the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) and a wide range of other independent business groups, including the American Booksellers Association and the American Independent Business Alliance, on a national survey of independent businesses.

The short survey had two goals: to gauge how independent businesses were faring in the downtown and to assess whether people are more aware and supportive of shopping locally and supporting independent businesses.

More than 1100 businesses responded to the survey, which found that independent businesses on average were faring a bit better than many of their chain competitors and, more importantly, that those in communities with strong Buy Local/Local First campaigns were outperforming local businesses in cities without such campaigns. More on these survey results can be found here.

The findings have since appeared in well over 100 media stories and have helped bring visibility to this growing movement and spotlight the effectiveness of Local First campaigns.

Once again, ILSR will be happy to breakout the results for your community provided that at least 20 businesses in your area participate.

If you have any questions about the survey, please contact the study lead, Stacy Mitchell, directly.

Sincerely,
The BALLE Team

The Jeannette Rankin Peace Center and Community Action for Justice in the Americas are partnering up to establish Missoula as the first Fair Trade City in Montana. Our hope is to establish this status by 2010. We have a lot of hard but positive work to do and we need your help to reach this goal! Gaining this status will place Missoula on the national map and will show our support for fair trade.

For Missoula to become a Fair Trade City, five goals must be met:

1) A steering committee is formed and meets regularly;

2) A range of Fair Trade products is readily available in local stores, cafes, and other venues;

3) Local organizations and institutions use Fair Trade products in offices and at events;

4) The Fair Trade Towns initiative attracts visible public support, including media attention;

5) The governing body passes a resolution, committing the town or city to procure Fair Trade and to publicly support the movement.

The SBC supports businesses, organizations and individuals that would like to pursue more environmentally and socially sustainable practices, while enhancing their economic viability. Visit our website HERE and learn how becoming a member can educate you as a consumer, assist your business and our help our community as a whole.
